The Government of Jamaica granted Noranda (New Day Aluminum) Special Mining lease 172 in 2017, and unless stopped will soon grant even larger SML 173. These two 30 year leases expand bauxite mining in St. Ann and Trelawny into the large North East UNPROTECTED part of Cockpit Country.

Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited (JBM) is a Governmentowned Company (a Public body) with a business enterprise mandate. JBM was incorporated on February 13, 1975. The Company holds 51% equity on behalf of the Government of Jamaica in the bauxite operations of its current partners, New Day Aluminium (Jamaica) Limited.
